Abiding Silence (Frank Messa)

Wig Woman
by D. K. Sterling

No one seems to
know her by name,
only the strange pile
of dead acrylic smothering
her antiquated head.

A faded mess of tangle
guessed to have been created
sometime during the 1940's.

No colour now;
indistinguishable from
bits of trash and dirt
clinging

as she meanders,
people stare or refuse
to allow her image to register
on their retinas.

In her insanity
"wig woman" is oblivious;
has no idea how
oddly ridiculous...

giving away polite smiles to
those passing by,
she believes they're admiring
how absolutely lovely
her hair is.
